The publisher Márcio Minto (Universidade de São Paulo [EESC-USP], Brasil ) has just announced the new issue 1 /2010 of the magazine "Design Management and technology", published as a result of the "First Symposium About the Quality of the Design" which took place at São Carlos University / USP, in 2009.

Our article, entitled "A theory for the development of IT in urban spaces" was chosen to open that issue, and it is somewhat a summary of my book "Information Technology in Urban Places: A theoretical framework for the development of IT applied in the space", which you can find here.

But the article recently published sumarizes the research for the development of a theoretical framework to help architects in the application of Information Technology (IT) to urban projects. In the developed framework, electronic components such as microprocessors, sensors, displays, tags, actuators, etc., were regarded as means of invigorating urban places in conjunction with physical refurbishment. Focusing on the potential within IT components to promote qualities such as territoriality, privacy, identity and ambience, three case studies where the framework was applied by architects and the results of their project are analysed. It has been concluded that there are reasons for appropriately deploying IT based on the nature of the place and the activities that happen within it.
